Take your dog for walks often in Nintendogs + Cats! You'll come across various items, such as:
Piggy banks: Don't sell these!! Smash them open, as they often contain a lot of money!
You can also take your 3DS with you while walking; for every 100 steps, you can receive a rare gift. Many of these can be sold for a nice sum.
