Offers less depth than its predecessors and therefore misses the mark
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Rio 2016 have made an appearance on the 3DS once before, namely when they traveled to London. The adventure in Rio will also be immortalized on the 3DS. Unfortunately, memories of previous installments make you expect too much this time.

The core of the game remains the same: the standard sports of the Olympic Games with unique controls and characters from the worlds of Mario & Sonic. However, the sports in the 3DS game are not as well-developed as before or in comparison to the Wii U version. The motion controls occasionally leave something to be desired.

The biggest miss is definitely the Dream Events. As serious as the Olympic events were, the Dream Events were chaotic. This provided some variety, but their absence makes the game quickly become boring. The story mode does make up for a lot, but even this, compared to the story mode of London 2012, is very short, simple, and unoriginal.

All in all, the game is a placeholder for the Wii U version. The difference between the two games is huge, and even the London adventure is still stronger on the 3DS than Rio presents itself now.

Are You Setting a New World Record?
From Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, a new game is released regularly. Usually, there is enough time in between to introduce some form of innovation, and they manage to do so each time by introducing new mini-games. But is this innovative enough?

No, after the umpteenth game in this series, this is no longer sufficient. The game is entertaining as before, but it no longer feels fresh. It starts to feel monotonous. It's a fun game to play against a few friends, but playing alone quickly becomes boring.

If you play these games frequently, you'll find it a bit too easy. The game does bring enough enjoyment for a short period and has enjoyable music.

Great sports game!
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is really fun to play. There are all kinds of fun sports including new ones that are very welcome. An example of new sports is BMX & horseback riding. Additionally, each sport has an extra mode that is more in the style of Nintendo and Sega. Very creative with all the bells and whistles. There is also a story mode where you can choose Mario or Sonic and their teams. Whichever you choose influences your story! That's very enjoyable and I find it super creative. There's also Download Play to play with all your friends with just one copy of the game. In short, a great sports game!
