Whether you love tennis or not, Mario Tennis Open is a great game!
Before playing Mario Tennis Open, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never played a game from the Mario Tennis series in my life. I'm also not a fan of the sport of tennis at all. Let alone knowing the rules of the game. Luckily, I am very familiar with the Mario universe. Let's see if Mario can spark my interest in tennis.

After the first match, all my doubts were completely gone. There is a good balance between playing tennis and the Mario elements. The controls work smoothly and the lucky zones are a fun addition. In addition to traditional tennis, there are also mini-games available where you can unlock extra items.

These items come in handy especially in the (online) multiplayer mode. Here, you can compete against your friends or players from around the world. This might be the most enjoyable aspect of Mario Tennis Open for me. It's delightfully addictive to play short matches over and over again and hopefully climb up the rankings.

Fun Mario Sports game with amazing online multiplayer!
There we go again! It's been a while since a Mario Tennis game was released. Now you can play 3D tennis with Mario and his friends in Mario Tennis Open!

The first important aspect in such a game is the controls. They work great in MTO. Each stroke has buttons (combinations) assigned to it. You can quickly memorize these. If that doesn't work, you can also tap the box on the touch screen corresponding to the stroke you want to make. However, this method is a bit less effective since you need to think and act quickly. That's why I'd recommend using the buttons.

You can also choose between the top-down view or behind your own character. The latter utilizes the gyro sensor. Unfortunately, this mode is not in 3D while the other one is. I believe the gyro sensor would have worked better than the top-down view.

The mini-games are also fun. There's Super Mario Tennis (my favorite!), Galaxy Rally, Ring Shot, and Ink Showdown. All of them are enjoyable to play, and each mini-game unlocks a new character! This can be quite challenging!

The online play in this game is fantastic. Playing against someone with a similar skill level is great. I can't really describe it, you just have to experience it yourself.

There are a few more things like scanning QR codes for new characters (Yoshi!) and clothing for your Mii. Mario Tennis Open is very enjoyable and also challenging to unlock everything. Definitely not a waste of money.

Great!
Mario Tennis Open is a really fun game! You can enjoy a game of tennis with Mario and his friends, and there are plenty of friends to choose from! You can unlock a huge variety of characters, and there are all kinds of different Yoshis you can get by scanning QR codes on the internet with your 3DS! There are also some fun Mario-themed mini-games that kept me entertained for a while. Another cool feature is that you earn money after each match. With this money, you can buy new clothes that your Mii character can wear! (this is especially fun for multiplayer). The tennis courts are enjoyable, although I wish there were more of them. The controls are good too; you can use the traditional buttons, but there's also an option to perform combos using the touchscreen and move using the 3DS Motion Sensor. It all works really well.
I'm not a big fan of the music though. It was a bit too hectic for my liking, which I don't think suits a Mario game. But Mario Tennis Open is definitely a great game and is a lot of fun to play in between.

Tennis with a smile!
This is Mario fun with Bowser (as slow as a turtle), Boo (with creepy spin shots), and 14 other Nintendo characters along with your own Mii. Your Mii keeps improving thanks to the items you win that make you stronger.
A new feature is the Lucky Zone in Mario Tennis Open. When you're in your Lucky Zone, you hit the ball extra well. The multiplayer options are great, even online.

A bit in the wrong direction
Handheld sports games have never been as good as the console versions, which is logical, you would think, the graphics are worse and the game can handle less. But besides that, there is something that disappoints me. Handheld sports games are increasingly being transformed into mini-game collections.

I understand the fact that motion control wasn't really an option on the 3DS, nevertheless, with the buttons, I find it all a bit too simple. The unpredictability (even though that often came from the poor motion control) of Mario Power Tennis (Wii/GCN), I miss that a bit. It all feels a bit spoon-fed. Sports are supposed to be unpredictable. Every match feels different. Of course, there are many modes and upgrades and such, but if the main mechanic doesn't feel right, there's not much left.

Now don't get me wrong, the game is not bad, and I refuse to give it a 4 because of my own conservative preference. Mario Tennis Open is a good game, but as a sports game, it misses the mark for me.

Tennis with your own Mii
I am very happy that there are a lot of Mario characters included and your own Mii that you can improve again. Also, online play is very nice, which I often miss in 3DS games. The ability to improve your Mii is also a big advantage; I find Mario Tennis Open a very enjoyable game!

Perfect online play
Here we have another excellent sports game from Nintendo. Mario Tennis Open is fun for everyone, even if you're not a fan of tennis. The special trick shots make this game very enjoyable. But the best part of this game is the Online Play. Playing with people online is the most fun thing to do. From beating people to losing, it never gets boring. I would definitely recommend this game.

Maybe it was better back in the day when online was still alive. But as a tennis game, it's literally just: go to the glowing spot and press the button. And that's basically it. But it's still a decent game if you want to switch off your brain and play a game with a series. Mario Tennis Open

If you think you're just about to miss that one ball, you might want to try pressing the R button. This will make your character perform a small jump, allowing you to reach that little bit further. Another handy tip is to position yourself right in front of the net when your opponent is about to make a lucky shot. If you press the R button now, you'll block the ball. Very useful, if you ask me. By deceiving your opponents, you can clinch that all-important match. When you get a luck zone, try standing in it while pressing the right button to execute the luck shot. This will cause the luck zone to start glowing. Just before you hit the ball, release the button and quickly press a different one. This will make your opponent expect a completely different shot, prompting them to take a different position. Just a heads up! This only works in the online mode of Mario Tennis Open!
