Fun experience for Batman fans, but lacks the depth of the larger Arkham games.
Not as good as its big brothers in the series, but enjoyable for fans. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate is a side-scrolling action-adventure with a dark, thrilling story. It takes place between Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum (if you're familiar with the other games). It features combat and stealth mechanics as you'd expect from the Bat. The graphics are decent for the 3DS, but the controls felt a bit clunky at times. I find the console games play a bit better. The game offers a good mix of action, puzzles, and exploration. Perhaps a bit more variety in the monotonous, dark levels would be nice. It was a fun experience if you played the other games too, but it lacks the depth of those "larger" Arkham games. Think of it as a tasty side dish, but not a main course.

7,5Interesting Metroidvania structure, but frustrating navigation
Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate on the Nintendo 3DS attempts to bring the thrilling world of the Arkham series to a handheld with a unique 2D perspective. As I navigate through the metroidvania structure, I find that discovering new gadgets to progress adds an engaging element. However, the navigation often feels unclear and at times even frustrating, especially due to the lack of a clear and comprehensive map.
The combat system retains the familiar smooth counter mechanics of the main series, something I personally appreciate. But due to the limitations of the 2.5D perspective, it sometimes lacks the impact and fluidity that I’m used to from the console versions. The atmosphere and the voice acting certainly contribute to an authentic Batman experience, which I find very appealing as a fan of the series. Still, I noticed that the missions became repetitive over time and the limited variety of enemies made it somewhat monotonous in the long run.
For big Batman fans like myself, it’s a nice addition to the collection. However, it’s a shame that the game doesn’t fully tap into the potential of the metroidvania genre. The elements are there, but they could have been better developed to provide a more immersive experience on the Nintendo 3DS.
